NDT inspector visas for Australian employers
Overseas non-destructive testing inspectors brought in for Australian shutdown or inspection campaigns generally come in on a Subclass 400 Temporary Work (Short Stay Specialist) visa where the campaign runs to a defined end date. What the role covers on Australian sites
NDT inspectors assess the integrity of welds, pipework, pressure vessels and structural steel without dismantling them — ultrasonic testing, radiography, magnetic particle, dye penetrant, eddy current, and the advanced methods that require specific qualification: phased array ultrasonics and time-of-flight diffraction.
Demand concentrates hard around shutdowns, because a shutdown is when inspection access exists. That concentration is exactly why local capacity runs out at precisely the moment every operator needs it.
What the application has to evidence
Method-specific certification and level — ISO 9712, ASNT or PCN, at Level 1, 2 or 3 — is the core of the case. Advanced methods carry their own qualification and those are meaningfully scarcer.
The scarcity argument here is unusually clean, and worth making explicitly: during a WA shutdown season, the available pool of locally certified inspectors in advanced methods is small and committed. What matters is documenting what local sourcing actually returned rather than asserting that none was available.
Certification and licensing — the clock nobody counts
This is the role where the certification question bites hardest. Overseas NDT certification is not automatically accepted for all Australian work — depending on the standard the work is performed to, the client’s specification, and the regime the asset sits under, Australian recognition or a specific qualification may be required.
That assessment is not part of the visa process and it runs on its own timeline. Confirm what your specification actually requires before the inspector is engaged, not after they arrive.
What usually goes wrong
Certification assumed to be portable. The most common and most expensive assumption on this role.
Method not specified. “NDT inspector” is not one skill. An application that does not name the methods and levels is a weaker case than one that does.
Booked too late in shutdown season. When everyone needs inspectors in the same eight-week window, the late applications are the ones with the least room.
