Instrumentation and controls technician visas
Instrumentation and control systems specialists brought into Australian plants for commissioning, upgrades or fault resolution generally come in on a Subclass 400 for defined work of up to three months, or a Subclass 482 for an ongoing role. Platform-specific expertise is usually the core of the case. Resource Visa prepares these applications for Australian operators, integrators and OEM service divisions.
What the role covers on Australian sites
DCS, SCADA and PLC commissioning, configuration and fault resolution; safety instrumented systems and functional safety work; field instrumentation calibration and loop testing; control system migrations and upgrades. Platforms are vendor-specific and expertise does not transfer cleanly between them.
What the application has to evidence
Name the platform. “Instrumentation technician” is generic. A specialist in a specific DCS family, on a specific version, with the vendor’s certification, is not — and the pool of people who can safely work on a live control system of a particular vintage is genuinely small.
Where functional safety is involved, the certification for that is separate again and worth stating.
The commercial consequence is usually easy to evidence on this role: a control system problem generally means plant that cannot run.
Certification and licensing — the clock nobody counts
Vendor certifications are portable. Where the work crosses into electrical installation, the state licensing question from the HV page applies. Functional safety certification is internationally recognised but is worth confirming against the site’s safety case requirements.
What usually goes wrong
Platform not specified. Throws away the strongest argument available.
Migration projects that run long. A control system migration is rarely a three-month job. Phase it properly or treat it as ongoing.
Remote support assumed to be equivalent. Sometimes it is, and where it genuinely is, that is a fair question the Department may ask. Be ready to explain why physical presence is required.
